Set up Outlook for off-campus use without the VPN
From the Control Panel "Classic View" double-click the mail icon 
This window should appear:
Select "Email accounts", then click Next.
Highlight the exchange account in the list and click "change". The following screen will display.
Click "More Settings..." and a new window is displayed. Select the "Connection" tab, then click "Connect to my Exchange mailbox.." checkbox at the bottom.
Select "Exchange Proxy Settings" and yet another window is displayed. Make the following changes in this new window:
- Type "owa.eng.iastate.edu" into the box marked "https://" as shown below.
- Select "Connect using SSL only". Leave the secondary checkbox unchecked.
- Select both checkboxes for "On fast networks ..." and "On slow networks ..." .
- Make sure that the Proxy authentication settings are set to "NTLM Authentication" in the drop-down box.
Close out of all windows by selecting "OK" or "Save" as necessary. When back to the "E-Mail Accounts" window, select "Next ->" and finally "Finish". Close out of the "Mail Setup" window.
The next time you start Outlook, you will be asked for your username and password.
