Jabber is an open-standard instant messaging protocol. The College of Engineering runs a Jabber server as part of its efforts to be at the cutting edge of education and research. Jabber Instant Messaging allows members of the College of Engineering to communicate and interact in new ways.
There are many jabber clients available. We recommend GAIM for UNIX, Exodus for Windows and Adium for OS X. Below you will find a guide for connecting using the Exodus client. The same information can be used with other clients as well.
If Exodus is not already installed on your PC, download Exodus for Windows from the download page above.
After installing Exodus on your computer, start the Exodus program. You will be greeted with this screen.

Fill in your ISU NetID, followed by @jabber.engineering.iastate.edu into the "Jabber ID:" box. (example: benvon
jabber.engineering.iastate.edu)
Note: Some of the example images below show the old server name 'jabber.eng.iastate.edu'. We just haven't updated the images yet. The new server is jabber.engineering.iastate.edu.
Use your ISU NetID password in the "Password:" box. You can check the "Save password" box if you would like Exodus to remember your password.
Click "OK".

The main Exodus program window will appear with a dialog box asking you which profile you would like to use to login. Click "OK" to accept the default profile.
If didn't tell Exodus to save your password, you will be prompted to enter a password. Use your ISU NetID password.
Once you're logged in, you will see this window:
You are now connected to the Jabber server.
